Chief Technology Officer and Vice President, Engineering & Technology Innovation

Lane Ballard is chief technology officer of The Boeing Company and vice president of Engineering & Technology Innovation. Named to this role in February 2026, Ballard shapes the company’s global technology strategy and builds engineering capabilities to support current programs and meet future challenges.
His organization develops and advances critical technologies that underpin Boeing’s future products. It also oversees engineering standards and technical development to ensure new technologies align with program needs and that engineering teams have the expertise to manage increasing complexity and scale. With more than 30 years of experience at Boeing, Ballard’s knowledge spans advanced technology development, large-scale program management and operational transformation.
Before his current role, Ballard was vice president and chief engineer of Global, Supply Chain and Systems Engineering, where he led integrated global engineering efforts to strengthen supply-chain connections and improve engineering solutions and first-pass quality.
Previously, he served as vice president and general manager of the 787 Program and site leader for Boeing South Carolina. He oversaw the design, build and delivery of the 787 Dreamliner and led the long-term strategy for the program’s production system.
Earlier roles included leading cross-functional teams in 787 preflight, paint and delivery, as well as spearheading production transformation initiatives for Boeing Commercial Airplanes. He served as director of the 787 Lean Global Production System and the BCA Lean Enterprise Office. He also led global research and development programs in materials and manufacturing technologies across Boeing commercial, space and defense businesses, managing teams working in metals, ceramics, composites fabrication, assembly and automation.
Ballard began his Boeing career in 1996 as an engineering intern. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech and both a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
